Cher has spent much of the last decade penning her two-part memoir, Cher: The Memoir, Part One and Part Two, and is finally ready to release the first part.
The star recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the trials she faced in deciding what to include, and the memories the project evoked. Writing the highly-anticipated tell-all made her more tired than anything, and she could not wait for it to be completed.
"Sometimes at the day's end, I would really be tired. We did this for months — going back and forward. But sometimes I would just say, 'You guys, I just can't do this anymore. I will be so glad when this is over.' Because sometimes when we were in the bad part, the bad part weighed so heavily. Now it's over, and it's not a part of me."
Cher certainly did not hold back when choosing what to reveal to readers, opening up about the "dark side" of her marriage to Sonny Bono, addiction, problems within her childhood, conversations with her mother, her acting career, hilarious moments she shared with other artists, and so much more. When all was said and done, the "Believe" icon did not find the process of creating a memoir very "healing."
"I don't know if it was healing. While I was talking about it, it was just exasperating and tiring. I just kept thinking, 'I don't want to keep doing this.' Then, there'd be something really funny, and I would go, 'Okay, I can do this.' But it's not an easy thing."
She continued, transparently unveiling that she threw her first draft away because she felt it was too "guarded."
"It's hard telling everything about your life. Some things really don't belong. I wasn't as forthcoming in the first version. Then I thought I don't want to do this like this, because if you're going to tell your life, you've got to tell your life. So, I went back and made the decision to say much more than I actually wanted to."
The legendary songstress told Entertainment Weekly that despite sharing a handful of secrets, she kept a few private details out of the memoir.
Part one of Cher: The Memoir, Part One and Part Two is slated for release on Tuesday (November 19) featuring details of Cher's childhood and marriage to Sonny Bono.
Part two, to be released sometime in 2025, will dive into stories within the Burlesque star's acting career.
