Newborn Baby Care Instructions From 1968 Are Crazy!

Each generation thinks they know the best way to take care of babies and a recently discovered list of care instructions from 1968 shows just how much things have changed over time. Micala Gabrielle Henson shared a photo of the directions for taking care of newborns that her mom was given at the hospital and her post went viral because people were surprised by how different things were 50 years ago.

  • One of the biggest shockers is that people could smoke in hospital rooms back then, but new moms were instructed not to do so while the baby is in the room.
  • There were also rules about visitors, they weren’t allowed to sit on the mother’s bed or be in the room during the designated baby feeding times, and that went for dads, too.
  • Babies were also kept in the nursery and only brought to moms at specific times for feedings: 9 to 10 am, 1 to 2 pm, 5:30 to 6:30 pm, and 9 to 10 pm.
  • And for nursing moms, the instructions get really detailed about how long to do that, suggesting only allowing five minutes the first day, seven minutes the second and third days, and 10 to 15 minutes on the fourth and fifth days, because they say any longer than that could make mom’s nipples sore.
  • They also have a no-no list for foods moms eat, including avoiding chocolate, raw apple, nuts, strawberries, onions, cabbage, and green coconut cake.
