A Blood Test To Detect Breast Cancer?

Dr. Hany Abdel-Hafiz injects DNA into breast cancer cells growing in a medium in a petri dish. He is a research scientist working in Dr. Kate Horwitz's lab (doing breast cancer studies) at the CU-Health Sciences Center.

Imagine getting a blood test that would detect breast cancer early on. That may be a reality.

A Utah hospital is looking for a way to do a simple blood test to help screen patients for breast cancer. Intermountain Medical Center is doing a three-year study that will attempt to detect DNA from tumors in blood samples.

Researchers hope to find markers that will indicate that cancer is present so that it can be caught and treated while still curable because between 10 to 30 percent of the cancers are missed in mammography screenings sue to dense tissue.

Until then, doctors are encouraging more men and women to undergo traditional breast cancer screening.
