Loebsack Calls For Shinseki Resignation

Posted May 29th, 2014 @ 12:58pm by By Heather Jordan

Iowa Congressman Dave Loebsack says Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki should resign immediately, due to recent reports that more hospitals are involved in secret waiting lists and delayed care.

"I have made it very clear that if these allegations were proven true, that heads need to roll. And Secretary Shinseki, even though he served in our military admirably, he simply needs to go in this case."

Results of a preliminary report by the VA Inspector General’s Office show that the delay of care to veterans and subsequent manipulation of records is systemic throughout the VA. The report also states that the delay caused the health care of veterans to be compromised.

Loebsack says Shinseki is not the only one to blame. He says there has to be more accountability through the chain of command, from the lowest level to the highest level.

But, there is a silver lining to the problem.  “We have re-focused our attention on our veterans and the health care that they have, and making sure we treat them with the dignity and respect that they deserve.”

He also called on Attorney General Eric Holder to begin an investigation into criminal wrongdoing.  Loebsack says the VA Inspector General's report makes it clear that there are scheduling problem agency-wide, not just isolated to the PhoenixHealthCenter. The report shows an average wait for care there of more than 100 days.
