Five Des Moines fire fighters were hurt early Saturday morning battling a blaze in downtown Des Moines.  This time, the fire was at the Equitable Building at 604 Locust Street, only blocks away from the former Younkers Building fire that occurred back in March.  The fire was reported just after midnight, after security guards reported hearing an explosion and strange noises coming from inside the building.

Des Moines Fire Captain Steve Brown says the fire started on the third floor in a mechanical chase.  Firefighters were able to break through the second floor ceiling to extinguish the fire.

Brown says the five fire fighter's injuries were not life threatening.  Four were taken to a local hospital, and three had been released as of 10:00 am Saturday morning. None of the injuries were considered serious.

Capt. Brown says crews will stay on hand throughout the day to put out any hot spots that flare up.
